The book brings together 23 national perspectives and 37 European researchers who worked on the book. Policies in Mediterranean and the former communist countries do not reflect increasing institutionalisation. This encompasses the relationships between all the various stakeholders governments, businesses and civil society taking into account the socioeconomic context in which these relationships stand. This policy shift was engineered as part of a broader restructuring of Australian society, which necessitated the reconstruction of knowledge, policy values, and identities to accord with the rationality of markets, competition, efficiency, and individualism. Consequently, the typologies of legitimacy developed are largely pragmatic, the most ephemeral and most easily attained form, rather than something that is enduring, embedded and taken-for-granted.

We draw on critical management studies as a form of counter-conduct towards mainstream theorizing and seek an alternative to Freirean critical dialogue as a tool to promote empowerment alongside ethics in corporate social responsibility. The concept of governmentality and four analytics of government are proposed as a means to examine systematic ways of exercising power and authority. This theoretical framework illuminates the specific rationales and practices of government that enable particular aspirations of reform -such as sustainability -to be constituted. In recent years business increasingly has been viewed as a major cause of social, environmental, and economic problems. It argues against an overvaluation of the 'problem of the State' in political debate and social theory.

This is because hybrids are less likely to yield functionally beneficial institutional complementarities. However, existing research has been limited to more narrowly construed factors that show an obvious link with ethics. The presumed trade-offs between economic efficiency and social progress have been institutionalized in decades of policy choices. The authors challenge this assertion. Denmark has performed as well as many purer cases during the 1990s. Instead, we have to realize that the government's capacity as an organizer relies on many other forms of media beyond power.

The book collects and unites viewpoints from various cultural and religious contexts, offering a comprehensive guide for international and globally active companies. Concerns about corporate social responsibil- ity have grown significantly during the last two decades. A particularly exposed role, most notably for multinational corporations from the global north, is emerging for corporations in developing countries. The varieties of capitalism literature maintains that advanced capitalist countries whose institutions best fit either the liberal or coordinated market economy types will perform better than countries whose institutions are mixed. Recent years has seen Chinese enterprises competing to broaden the scope of business through the internationalization strategy. The proliferation of the strategy is attributable to the favorable environment created by the Chinese government with the increasingly stringent requirements on corporate social responsibility. The article assesses the achievements and limitations of the private regulation of global corporate conduct. Business is caught in a vicious circle. In this view business firms are conceived of as economic actors, and governments and their state agencies are considered the only political actors. The author argues that while private regulation has resulted in some substantive improvements in corporate behavior, it cannot be regarded as a substitute for the more effective exercise of state authority at both the national and international levels. We compare two countries that represent two very different models of government action. Looking at the underlying 'market rationality' of governance, and critically examining the notion of 'corporate social responsibility', it concludes that the moralization of markets further sustains, rather than undermining, neo-liberal governmentalities and neo-liberal visions of civil society, citizenship and responsible social action. Modern political rationalities and governmental technologies are shown to be intrinsically linked to developments in knowledge and to the powers of expertise.

They continue to view value creation narrowly, optimizing short-term financial performance in a bubble while missing the most important customer needs and ignoring the broader influences that determine their longer-term success. And Denmark has recently developed a more hybrid form than is generally recognized by a increasing the exposure of actors to market forces and b decentralizing collective learning and decision making. Integrating current scholarship on the state as a catalyst of private regulatory regimes with prior literature on regulatory failure and self-regulation, it identifies and problematizes unsettled assumptions used as a starting point by this growing body of research. The paper provides novel empirical insights into how sustainability accounting shaped forms of power, rationales and practices in a supply chain.

The article invokes the concept of 'responsibilization' as means of accounting for the epistemological and practical consequences of such processes. This chapter discusses an issue central to business life but too often neglected in management accounting teaching and research: globalisation and its impact on management control systems.
